Crime and Disorder Scrutiny
The Police and Justice Act 2006 set out new provisions for the scrutiny of crime and disorder issues.
Every local authority is now required to have a crime and disorder committee with the power to make recommendations regarding the functioning of the local Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnership (CDRP).
The Canterbury CDRP is called the Canterbury Community Safety Partnership and the Scrutiny Committee serves as the Crime and Disorder Committee.
Under the Act, the Scrutiny Committee can:
- Scrutinise decisions made and actions taken in connection by the responsible authorities that make up the CDRP.
- Request information from the responsible authorities
- Require attendance of officer or employees or responsible authorities to answer questions or to provide information.
The responsible authorities are required to respond to any recommendations made by the Scrutiny Committee within 28 days or as soon as possible after.
